Teradata is a MPP architecture which means it has many virtual machines working together in parallel. I say virtual here because each node will contain many VProcs, otherwise known as AMPs. Each of these machines have their own isolated space in memory and typically control four physical disk drives.
Sometimes when getting onto an unfamiliar system it is helpful to understand how many AMPs exist as a measure of scale. The determination is very simple.
-- note: () is equivalent to null; AMPs are numbered from 0 to n select hashamp() + 1 as "AMP count";
I hope this simple tip helps.
